Cooloola Way is an easy track to travel |
From the south you can choose to either drive to Rainbow Beach via the bitumen, or via the beach form the Noosa North Shore, or trek into the Great Sandy National Park along the Cooloola Way. If you want to explore the beach, start from the ferry at Tewantin and you you can head right up the beach, passing the Southern Section of the Great Sandy National Park on your left. The beach here is part of the Cooloola sand mass, which extends for some 60 km along the coast from Teewah to Rainbow Beach. It reaches inland up to 17 km and can attain a height of 240 m. Similar sand masses form Fraser, Moreton and Stradbroke Islands.
This area is considered such a unique wilderness region it has recently been nominated for 'World Heritage' listing. Cooloola contains a vast array of natural wonders, including the Noosa River and Lakes system, high dune rainforests and perched lakes, not to mention more than 80kms of pristine beaches. Generally the beach is very wide and well compacted but always watch for wash outs or other obstacles that can be very dangerous, especially if you are not traveling at a safe speed. Our hire vehicles are supplied with recovery gear so if you do get stuck make sure to wave someone down to help out. There are a number of camping options available along this beach for a full map see the map here. There are fantastic spots to bring a camper trailer to along this area of the coast. If you do take a camper trailer along the beach it pays to be extra cautious, especially when the sand may be soft after a long dry period. The extra weight of the trailer can bog your car in very quickly.
Once you reach Double Island Point make sure to climb up to the lighthouse to gain a spectacular view. There are regular sightings of dolphins, turtles, manta rays, and humpback whales from here. Just before Double Island Point is Leisha track which runs through to Wide Bay. Only cross here if it is absolute low tide as there are a number of large trees blocking the beach back into Rainbow Beach. If you need to trek back down the beach and cross at Freshwater Track. From Leisha Track it is only a short drive around Wide Bay to reach the township of Rainbow Beach.
